Heaven forbid that I should go…
If you are a horselover, like me, you will surely have heard the saying “God forbid that I should go to any Heaven in which there are no horses.” Well, while I agree with that, I also must say, as I sit here snuggled in my cozy warm studio while old man winter blusters outside, that God forbid that I should go to any Heaven in which there are no hot rods either! Like the title of the Stone Temple Pilots song, “Heaven and Hot Rods”. They go hand in hand.
Other songs that inspire the memories are Kazzer’s “Pedal to the Metal” (about the only “rap” type song I love, an it’s by a Canadian!), and of course, Metallica’s “Fuel” and my “get me in the mood to write” theme music for my drag racing story in progress, “Sad But True“. Oh yes, and can’t forget that Motley Crue tune “Kickstart My Heart” where it speaks of “…top fuel funny car will do it for me!” Oh yeah!!! The thunder, the excitement of a well tuned race car. *droooool* But now I’m getting off topic ain’t I? Well, actually no, my racing life (and summertime) is the inspiration behind my script in progress, so I need to get into this mood to be able to write it. Maybe I’ll get some time to write today, we’ll see. If I’m a good girl and get all my scheduled work done.
ANYHOO….The one thought that keeps me sane throughout our crazy long cold miserable Saskatchewan winters is knowing that spring in May will come again, and the roar of engines will be heard once more. The smell of burning rubber, the familiar settings of the racetrack during the day, the fellowship and comradery. The nighttime fun on 8th Street Saskatoon, the kids enjoying McDonald’s treats as we hang out at the mall parking lot chatting with some friends we’ve made over the years. Ahhhhh bliss!!!! For those of you who know what I’m talking about, you can feel it in the air. It’s only five months away!
I’ll leave you with a pictorial of what Heaven and Hot Rods means to me and how it keeps me sane during this long boring cold winters we have here.
The first picture of us in our Phoenix was taken by an unknown spectactor along 8th Street during 2005’s Cruise Weekend. Thank you, whoever you are!

Then we jump ahead to summer at the drag strip. One of my fondest places to be, in the staging lanes, where the roar of engines, the smell of tiresmoke (can they bottle that??) and the total and undeniable feel of summer envelopes you.

As the Phoenix waits patiently for her turn….

And of course, one of the best things about the track, the wonderful people and many friends we make there….

The track opens again in May, so you will be sure to see me there, with the Phoenix who will happily be brought out of winter retirement. You don’t want to see where she is right now, poor thing. In the backyard, covered in snow. *shudder* Yuck yuck yuck!!!
